Description
The area near Devils Tower and the Belle Fourche river valley was once home to vast bison herds. As they were hunted to near extinction, the bison habitat changed to ranch lands. Cowboys drove the wild cattle of west Texas and New Mexico in to this region. Those who were not discouraged by the extreme winters flourished in the area. Cattle ranching continues to be a primary industry. Many families have operated ranches on the same land for seven or eight generations. They continue to pass on the ranching way of life from generation to generation. These families feel a strong attachment to the land, and especially to Devils Tower, which has towered above their lives for over 100 years.
